This course emphasizes the development of skills in critical reading and careful analysis of literature. Literature study focuses on types: short stories, poetry selections, including at least one Shakespearean drama and several novels. In addition to experiencing the literature, students will interpret and evaluate the work(s) within appropriate social and cultural contexts.
Writing is an integral component for this course. Vocabulary study will include verbal analogies generated primarily from the readings.Students will strengthen writing skills in paragraph writing, emphasizing correct grammar, word choice and organization.Writing projects will center on reading selections as well as expository and persuasive essays of two-three pages in length. A research paper of 5-7 pages in length is an expectation using MLA format. All writing and discussion will demand that students support ideas and opinions with direct and specific references to the literature under consideration.
