Course Description: The main focus of Introduction to Speech is to help the students become more efficient, more self-confident, more creative and more successful as communicators. Building strong communication skills will help students unlock the door to a better self-understanding. It can aid in building stronger relationships as students develop greater ease in expressing their thoughts and feelings effectively and understandably.
We wrap up Grade Period 2 this week with a Pet Peeve/Gross Injustice speech (students choose which), and we look to the end of semester and our last five speeches: a Rap, a Poetry Speech, an Introduction/Eulogy, an I Was There speech, and the Final Exam speech - a persuasive speech. Speech will have no written final exam, but the persuasive speech will encompass all we have focused on this semester and be 15% of the final grade. The poetry speech will call upon analysis along with good communication skills, and the I Was There speech and the persuasive speech will include a research component.
Let me reiterate what I said at the beginning of the semester and thank you for sharing your students with me. They are great young men and women. Without exception, they have achieved my expectations by becoming more effective communicators and more confident speakers. As an added bonus, we have had a good time achieving these goals. I will miss them all.
Please know I am always available to you and your student.
Sincerely, Lana Carlson
